gaba GLBT Super City Candidates Forum Print E-mail

What does the Super City mean to you?

A

s the current regional and territorial authorities move towards becoming a single, unitary council in October 2010, what is the new structure, and how could it affect you?

Who are the candidates that could be the voice of GLBT issues on the Super City?

As a long-standing election tradition, gaba (Gay Auckland Business Association) is pleased to host a forum for the GLBT mayoral, council and board candidates for the forthcoming Super City elections.

Independent Mayoral candidate Simon Prast will give a lay-person’s (and apolitical) guide to the Supercity structure before outlining his own electoral policies.

So far confirmed to speak and take questions from the floor are:

Christopher Dempsey (City Vision - Waitemata Local Board)

Bruce Kilmister (City Vision - Waitemata Local Board)

Claudette Hauiti (Citizens and Ratepayers - Albert Eden Local Board, Owairaka Subdivision)

Simon Randell (Independant - Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board, Maungakiekie Subdivision)

Ray Threkkleson (Independant - Waitemata Local Board)

gaba President Glenn Sims is extending the invitation to speak to any other GLBT candidates that may be standing in the local body elections.  He can be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The electoral forum takes place at the next gaba monthly meeting on 1st September, Dots Bar, 223 Symonds Streets from 6pm.

Entry to the monthly gaba meeting is usually free for gaba members and $10 to non-members however, as a one-off, entry will be FREE TO EVERYONE in

the Auckland GLBT community.

Call for PhD Research for Same Sex Marriages Print E-mail

My name is Dionne Steven and I am doing a PhD on same-sex civil unions. I am looking for couples throughout New Zealand to take part in this study.

To qualify, couples need to have had a civil union or be planning to have a civil union.

Following is a little more information about my research and what would be involved for people who decide to participate.

My research project is qualitatively-based and aims to fashion an understanding of same-sex civil unions from the perspective of couples who have chosen to formalise their relationship. Couples who agree to take part in this study will be asked to participate in one or possibly two informal interviews lasting approximately 60-90 minutes. In these interviews I will ask the couple various questions relating to each partner's background; the history of their relationship; their decision to enter into a civil union; the characteristics of their ceremony; and what if any impact their civil union has had on their relationship and their relationship with others. The interviews will take place in the couple's home or at a location of their choosing. If couples are comfortable to do so, I will ask them to show me photos of their civil union. This will not only provide me with a visual image of their ceremony but may also help the couple to recall relevant details that they might otherwise have forgotten. To allow me to recall and interpret the interviews with greater accuracy I would like to record them using a small digital recorder. Participation is voluntary and if any participant feels the need to withdraw from the project they may do so without question.
